Gladys did not have a given middle name. While in grade school, she felt bad that others had one and gave herself a middle name, Elaine.

Gladys was born at her Mom's sister's Farm. It was common in those years for the doctor to come to the house to help with the birthing.
One of Glady's memories is sliding down the cellar dooor and getting slivers in her behind. Her Dad (Dodo to us kids) had to pull them out. (A great story to tell her grandkids.)
When Gladys was growing up, her family only talked Czech (aka Bohemian) at home. When she went to school, her teacher would only speak English. Gladys went home crying after her first day. Ever since then, she was determined that her kids would not suffer the same embarrassment. Her kids were only taught English at home and never did get a chance to learn Czech, much to their disappointment, although this way their grandparents could talk to each other without them knowing what they were saying.

399 Came to America at age 4 with his parents. Married and settled on a farm in Butler County, 2 miles south and 1 mile east of Linwood, Nebraska in a sod house. When mice and snakes were crawling down through the sod roof, John used to tell his mother "Let's go back where we had a nice house." Then his father, Peter Kucera, hauled lumber with a team of horses from Fremont and built a 2 room house they were proud of and still stood on the farm as of 1946. It was used in 1946 for repairing harnesses and junk. Mr. Kucera, when farming, had 2 fingers cut off by a corn sheller and, when cutting down trees for wood, had a tree fall on his leg which broke his leg. He still liked to work after he retired and helped thrashing on the farm. At 74, he felt better working than sitting around the house (From 50th anniversary, 1946, as recorded by Mrs. John P. Kucera). Kucera, John Peter (I104)
