1066 | Reeve (Rychtar) was a mayor of a village or small town magistrate with limited autonomy competences, usually being nominated by feudal authority (owner of estate or domain). Reeve was an executive body of that authority and acted as interface between feudal office and village inhabitants. Reeve with help of aldermen solved small disputes, prepared testaments, assisted in property transfers and supervised fulfillment of feudal duties. Reeve was usually exempted from the drudgery during his term of office. More important matters e.g. complaints, accusations, debts, confirmations of land property transfers, orphan's trustee and management of municipal and church property was solved once per year during so called reeve court days, under control of feudal clerks, where reeve assisted. Court days were held in winter time, each village had different term. The reeve's office was extinct in 1849, when villages received full autonomy. | Nemec, Jan (I2500)
